Post Reply How to approach a career break on a CV

I took a career break to pursue one of my dreams and go travelling. Now I am back and I want to enter the job market again. What is the best way to include this on a CV - I am concerned that employers may look upon such a career break in a negative light?

Come On Come On!

I don't necessarily think employers will look at this negatively - after all, so many people do it! I would tell them what you learned from it - it will have also given you a wider view of the world, perhaps you learned something about a different culture, or picked up some new skills.

Would the fact that you pursued one of your dreams be seen as a good thing by an employer because you had the determination to do it? Or would it be seen as something you "could do again", making you a bit of a liability?

Chasing dreams can never be seen as a liability. I think it shows drive and courage of character. Don't be ashamed that you took a career break, plenty of people do - similarly thousands switch career directions at varying stages of their careers.

That's a good point, though you could approach it from the other way and say that now the travelling has been done it is time to settle down and concentrate on your career.

As said in a previous post there are plenty of people who do it nowadays so isn't viewed as a bad thing necesarily.
