How long should you stay in a first job, if there are no signs of promotion or extra training opportunities?  I have been somewhere for nearly two years but have not developed any new skills or been challenged profoundly. Should I look elsewhere?

If the job is not engaging you and not helping you develop then its definately time to move on!  Its no good waiting for things to happen, you have to push yourself i think.  Have you spoke to your boss about this?

I would generally say between 2 - 3 years for your first job, then move on. Unless, its a really great company with lots of growth opportunities. It might not be that easy to find a new job now, but the cliche is true... It's always easier to find another job if you have a job! It can't hurt to look around and a change of environment will keep you sharp and focussed!

Thanks for your replies, still stuck here unfortunately :( But constantly looking for something better to come along. I know I'll find something eventually but I hope it doesn't take forever!!

Hey Bobbert, how is the job hunt going? I hope you found something better. It's a real issue when you're stuck somewhere and there are no real opportunities available to you; things start to get stale and you realise it's not going to get any better!
