I was wondering if anyone knew the reasons behing the generic questions asked either on an application form or at a first interview?  I always find them pointless, which renders most my answers useless.  I am certain this is holding backmy progreassion on my job hunt so am hoping to rectify this issue a.s.a.p.  Any help would be much appreciated.

I always like to have these "soft" questions at the beginning of the interview as although it may not be directed related to the job area or candidate's experience - it can often help the candidate relax. I'm sure it doesn't work for everyone, but its certainly helped me in the past!

I agree that it made me relax in my interviews. Being asked "tell us about yourself" or "what are your hobbies" gives me a chance to be passionate about what I enjoy rather than being plunged into answering questions about the specifics of the job.

Go into them with the same drive as you would all the questions. It won't create a very good impression if you give very drab, dry answers to the first things you're asked.

Very true even if they can seem pointless, there is a reason they are asked.

They've very often generic for a reason - you can practise them to wow employers.

I think that one of the reasons may be so that the employers get more insight in to what kind of personality you have, and also to put you eat at ease during the interview. Interviews can be a scary process for many, so generic questions may seem pointless, but often they do help you. As Kite mentioned, you will have a chance to talk about yourself and what you are passionate about, which may help you overall.

If you feel that the generic questions actually are your hinder in the application process, well then, I would try to practise them. The questions may be generic, but they often touch upon the same type of questions.

I agree with you that they always ask the same generic questions in all interviews. All recruiters, in all companies...however, there're reasons to do this.

What can replace commom interview questions?
