Post Reply Interview Technique

Does anyone have any tips on how to go about standing out from the crowd at an interview?  Or anything that definitely should avoid doing so as not to leave a negative impression?  I have been given silly tips such as not having a floppy handshake or ensuring my flies are done up, but I mean real advice.

If the interview is competency based, remember that companies often go by the so called STAR method and keep that in mind.

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result. So if you are asked to describe managerial skills, pick a situation, describe the task / goal, talk concretely about what action YOU took (not team members, don't say we, say I) and explain the result.

Works everytime, because it structures your answer.

I totally agree on making use of the "I", not using "we" to describe actions you've taken, even if they were as part of a team! The employer is interested in what YOU can do so have the confidence to say you made a real impact on whatever the problem was. Even if you're not feeling confident in the interview (and let's face it, you're unlikely to be) you have to portray that you are, and keep smiling, be passionate and enthusiastic!
