Post Reply Dress to impress?

I am confused as to what to wear for an interview.  I have gone to a few recently and however I choose to dress, the other candidates appear to have chosen the direct opposite to me.  How does one know what level of formal dress is required at an interview?

I always wear a suit to an interview - sure it makes you stand out like a sore thumb if you're going to interview at an informal company, but I think it's best to wear one as to not appear too casual.

On a second interview at a casual workplace, I did dress down a little and wore black trousers and a smart jacket - so not a suit this time. But if it were a more formal company I would have worn the suit every time!!

Always suit - even if going for a media company job.

I agree with Jimbo! It is always better to be overdressed than underdressed. Dressing formally sends out a signal to your prospective employer that you are taking the interview seriously and have a professional attitude. Even hip / young / informal companies will still appreciate this attitude on an interview, in my opinion.

For ladies, I would also suggest to take it easy on make-up, earrings, etc.

Always wear a suit even if it makes you seem out of place; nobody's going to laugh at you for it.

There's research to show that if you dress as if you're already on a high salary, you're more likely to be offered decent money!

I agree with the suit, it gives a positive impression to employers, regardless of whether their workplace has a 'dress down' policy or not. It shows you have a good attitude to work and are taking the interview seriously.

Agree with the people saying to wear a suit. Dressing ti impress is key in interviews and early stages of a new job. People can't help but form opinions based on appearance! As sad as that may be, it is a reality in the workplace so make the effort to look you best. http://graduatecareertips.co.uk/2011/06/15/does-it-matter-what-i-wear-to-work/

Below some guildlines I found. I see it's nice article and I want to share others. I hope it's helpful...Good luck in interview to all!

  • If wearing a suit, make sure that it fits properly and is clean and pressed. For women, if you choose to wear a skirt, make sure it is of appropriate length.
  • Your shoes should always be clean and polished and match the outfit you have selected. Your sock color should always match your shoes.
  • If your belt loops are showing, it is appropriate to wear a belt. When selecting a belt, choose one that coordinates with your shoes, handbag/portfolio, and the rest of your attire.
  • Your nails should be clean and neat and if wearing a polish, avoid bright colors.
  • Limit the pieces of jewelry that you wear and try not to select pieces that will be distracting to the interviewer.
  • In regards to perfumes and colognes, all scents should be kept to a minimum. If interviewing in a small space, the scent may become overwhelming. Also there is the possibility that your interviewer may be allergic to some scents.
  • Refrain from chewing gum during the interview. Instead, pop a mint right before going into the office and bring extras in case the day goes long or you are invited to a meal.
  • Your hair should always be clean and neatly groomed. If needed, schedule a haircut a day or two before the interview. Refrain from making any drastic changes right before your interview.
  • It is helpful to carry a portfolio or briefcase with you to an interview. This will allow you to bring your interview questions, a copy of your resume and references, and to jot down any notes that you take.
  • Most importantly, make sure that you are comfortable. If you will be walking to a second location, you may want to break in your shoes beforehand. Make sure your outfit is comfortable when sitting, standing, and walking.
