Although arriving at work first and leaving last is considered one way of improving your standing with the boss, it doesn’t matter how long you slog away if you make no other efforts to get yourself noticed as a promotion candidate. So, long hours aside, what should you be doing to get ahead?
Develop short and long-term goals: these will give you a definite path to follow. Effectively setting out your route in bite-sized pieces will make your career aspirations more attainable.
Treat your boss like a client: always be aware of his/her needs and pull out all the stops to satisfy them. If you can 'go the extra mile', presenting more than he/she expects, you will stand yourself in good stead.
Be reliable: volunteer for additional work and seek to help your colleague's wherever possible so that you are considered by them as someone to come to when in need.
Be visible within your industry: volunteer to represent the company at conferences, etc. If applicable you could submit reports to industry publications, etc.
Be sociable: you will struggle if you are not respected so, while you have to put in the long hours, make sure you are part of 'the team' participating in / organising social activities.
Always be presentable: and ensure that your verbal and non-verbal communication is appropriate. Try to maintain an even temper when under pressure, you will be respected for it.
