Considering a job offer that requires you to move to a new location is a huge decision. It is fundamentally important to gather as much accurate information as possible and ask yourself some pretty tough questions.
The Basics
-Research the area to which you plan to move. What is the cost of housing/living there? If expensive, will your new salary compensate?
-Add up the cost of moving home. Has your new employer offered you any form of relocation expenses? If not, can you actually afford the move?
-Be sure you will be comfortable with the culture of your new surroundings. Moving back might prove costly if, for example, house prices have soared. Each British city has its own character and idiosyncrasies, how well will you fit in? Again, make sure you do your research and spend as much time as possible in the area before making a final decision.
Consider the implications for loved-ones
-Are there amenities in place in the new location to meet all their needs? If you have children, what about the schools? Can you and your partner maintain the standard of social life you may have grown accustomed to?
-Is the move entirely necessary? It might be that your company is relocating but for personal reasons, you do not wish to leave. In this case, it is worth asking if you can work from home. You never know, your company may be happy to set you up with email, fax, PC, etc. Modern technology makes working from home an increasingly viable option.
