So you want to be a top boss?
So you want to be a top boss?
Do you aspire to reaching the very top? Maybe you fancy taking over the reigns of a leading law firm, or perhaps your interests lie in accountancy or IT? Whatever your industry, if you do have ambitions of reaching the pinnacle, you’ll have to give careful consideration to the assets, skills and talents you will need to possess and develop - not to mention the sacrifices you will have to make.
What makes a successful boss?
Any good manager / leader possesses certain qualities that have put them in a position of responsibility. Do you think you can:
Command the respect and loyalty of your employees. According to recent studies the more valued an employee feels, the less likely they are to cheat their employer. How would you make your staff feel valued while maintaining office discipline?
Become a leader in your field.Clearly you have to know your industry. You must be able to make quick decisions – and get them right. People will be looking to you for guidance – can you provide it?
Maintain your passion for the industry. If you want to reach the top of your chosen industry, you must be able to maintain your drive and enthusiasm. If you are growing restless, this will convey itself to your staff who will automatically lose confidence in you.
Give up on a significant percentage of your home life. Those who aim high in business, more often than not, have to put in incredibly long hours in order to get there, often sacrificing leisure time with their families. Are you prepared to make that kind of commitment?
Deal with the stress and pressure that comes with the responsibility. If you do have to work long hours it is likely life will become a little more stressful than it would have been if you had chosen a different career path. On top of that, you have to think of the enormous responsibilities that will be resting on your shoulders. People’s jobs and incomes, not to mention the future of the company, rest on the decisions you make every day.
