If the words Feng Shui cause Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen and MDF to spring to mind then it’s time to think again. It could actually be a crucial way of making your job more enjoyable according to some experts and the philosophy is being used in many offices to try and create a more peaceful and productive workforce.
The idea is that your environment can have either a positive or negative affect on your behaviour and you can turn this to your advantage by rearranging your office to allow a free flow of energy, or ‘chi’.
So we’ve decided to help out any of you who feel that bad feng shui may be obstructing the flow of your chi and causing problems in your workplace by compiling a list of handy tips…
• You should be able to see the entrance door to your office from your desk. If you can’t and it’s not possible to move your desk then positioning a mirror to reflect the door works as well.
• You should be able to see outside while at your desk. If you are not near a window, then you can hang a picture of an outdoor scene instead.
• Get rid of any clutter. If you have a lot on your desk and the surrounding area then this will hinder the flow of your chi.
• When in a meeting, try not to sit near a sharp corner that will be pointing at you, i.e. desk corner or the edge of a filing cabinet. Again, this will cut off your chi.
It might be worth giving this a go if you dread going to work or you feel unproductive when you get there. You might be sceptical but when you think about it, it’s very logical. By being able to see the door you can prepare yourself for what might be coming rather than have people sneak up (whether unintentionally or not!) on you. If you can see outside then it helps to keep you refreshed and not feel stuck and isolated in your office. By clearing the clutter off your desk, you are likely to have less distractions and a calmer feeling work space. Give it a go…what have you got to lose?
