Relocating For Work

Danielle McQueen, 04 May 2007

One of the most common reasons for people relocating to other parts of the country or even abroad is because of work, either in the pursuit of a better job opportunity or because they are transferred by their employers.

It can be a very stressful time and considering whether to move house and location for a new job is a big decision to make.  It is important to get all the relevant information you need before deciding what you are definitely going to do and there are many factors to take into account.

• Firstly and most importantly you need to thoroughly research the area where you will potentially be living.  Does it offer everything you need?  This is especially important if you are moving with family and children.  Are there sufficient job opportunities for your partner and good schooling facilities?

• You should also consider the cost of living in the new location.  If it is more expensive then the chances are, you new salary will also rise accordingly but this should still be something to look into.

• The actual cost of moving is also an important factor.  On top of thinking about general living expenses in a different location, you should also bear in mind the costs of moving home.  Some companies will offer you a relocation package to help with this but if this is not the case the costs will soon add up.

Relocating can be a very exciting time for some people and it may be the best career move you could make especially if it is because of an interesting new job offer with better prospects and a bigger salary.  If, however, it is not a decision that has been made by you and it is your current company that is relocating you might not be so wiling to move.  In this case a possible alternative is to ask whether you can work from home instead.  If they agree it means you can keep your current job while staying in your own home.
