What makes people quit their jobs?

Danielle McQueen, 02 May 2008
You might think that long hours and stressful workloads would be the main reasons we would consider moving jobs.  However, a recent report published by fish4jobs has found that the main offenders in the British workplace are your colleagues, as over half of us (51%) admit disruptive co-workers are pushing us to consider a new career path (Onrec).

They found that the top ten office offences are:

1. Poor personal hygiene (59% said this was the worst sin a colleague could commit)

2. Shouting in the office and generally making unnecessary noise (44%)

3. Stealing stationery from desks (35%)

4. Sending huge email attachments that crash the system (31%)

5. Cooking smelly food at lunchtime (22%)

6. Messy desks or making mess in the office (15%)

7. Constant pen clicking (14%)

8. Bad language (10%)

9. Weird personal habits like cracking knuckles (9%)

10. Stealing food from the fridge (7%)

Joe Slavin, chief executive, at fish4jobs comments, “The research shows that UK workers are easily annoyed by their colleagues and the little things do seem to get on our nerves. However it isn’t the minor issues that send workers running for the door, but larger problems that are only made worse by a colleague’s irritating behaviour. UK employees should try to follow our simple fish4jobs tips which give advice on how to survive a challenging workplace.”

They state that to make your working day a little less stressful and more manageable you should firstly be honest with the person you have a problem with – they might not even know they are annoying people.  However, if you feel you are not able to confront your colleague, then talk to their line manager and see whether they can help you by talking to the ‘offender’.
