Interviewer's Pet Hates!

Danielle McQueen , 20 September 2006

So you've sent off your CV and covering letter and you've got the all important first interview. You're feeling happy and confident that the interviewer is going to love you and you know what you are doing. However it is worth reading on to make sure you know exactly what NOT to do at the interview stage.

There are in fact a number of things that interviewers hate and if you accidentally stumble across one, you can wave that job offer goodbye. Read on.

Poor communication skills

It is possible to give both too much and too little information. If you talk too much, you run the risk of just rambling on and boring the interviewer. On the other hand, if you speak too little this can really annoy to interviewer who feels like they are trying to get blood out of a stone.

Not making eye contact

You have probably heard this time and time again but it is really important. If you do not make eye contact you can come across as rude and disinterested. However also be careful not to just stare at the interviewer as this will probably just frighten them!

Not preparing

Now that nearly all companies have a website, it is easy to research and find out the basic information about the company and the particular job you are going for. If you seem unprepared or cannot answer these questions then I wouldn't expect a job offer!

Dressing inappropriately

Just make sure you have dressed in keeping with the type of job and company you are applying for. For most interviews a suit is the most appropriate option.

You wouldn't believe it but the following are true examples...

- One job applicant challenged the interviewer to an arm wrestle

- A candidate brought their dog to the interview

- One candidate fell asleep during the interview

- An interviewee wore a walkman throughout and when asked to remove it said that they could listen to music and answer the questions at the same time

- Another ate a hamburger and chips during the interview after announcing that she hadn't had time for lunch

Hope this was helpful to all you job seekers!
